Brief History
In 1908, the Royal Mint in Ottawa struck a gold sovereign coin and a “C” for Canada. Afterwhich, in March 1912, the Department of Finance asked the Royal Mint to mint 8,000 pieces of five-dollar gold coins and 8,000 pieces of ten-dollar gold coins. These coins then became the first Canadian gold coins. The coin has the word “Canada” on it and the country’s coat of arms.
Decades later, in 1979, the Royal Canadian Mint started producing one-ounce gold bullion with a $50 face value. The Canadian government guarantees the coins for their weight and purity. The coin is made of 99.9% pure gold. The Canadian Maple leaf soon became one of the most popular gold coins worldwide. The coin is minted and issued once a year.
The coin features a portrait of Queen Elizabeth II. The coins that 1979 coins until 1989 feature a 39-year-old queen. Meanwhile, since 2014, the coin has been featuring a portrait of 79-year-old Queen Elizabeth II.
